The “C4” refers to butyl-bonded silica (a C4 alkyl chain attached to silica), which provides a moderately non-polar stationary phase.
Typical Uses of Hi-Purit™ C4 SPE Cartridges:

C4 is less hydrophobic than C8 or C18, making it ideal for medium-sized peptides and small proteins.
